WEST HOUSTON MEDICAL CENTER PERFORMS HOUSTON’S FIRST PROSTATECTOMY USING DA VINCI XI ROBOT
HOUSTON, tX, sEPTEMBER 29, 2014 — HCA affiliated West Houston Medical Center (WHMC), in collaboration with the Texas Institute for Robotic Surgery, announced today that it performed the city of Houston’s first radical prostatectomy using the da Vinci Xi Surgical System. Dr. Steven Maislos, Medical Director of WHMC’s da Vinci program, performed this robotic surgery on September 25th, in conjunction with national prostate cancer awareness month.
“I am thrilled to bring the advanced da Vinci Xi Surgical System technology to West Houston Medical Center and our community. I am very excited our surgeons have the opportunity to provide state-of-the art minimally invasive surgical care to our patients,” said Todd Caliva, Chief Executive Officer of West Houston Medical Center.
The da Vinci Xi Surgical System can be used across a spectrum of minimally-invasive surgical procedures and has been optimized for multi-quadrant surgeries in the areas of gynecology, urology, thoracic, cardiac and general surgery. Robotic surgery is performed through a few small incisions by the surgeon who is seated at an ergonomically designed console. As with all da Vinci Surgical Systems, the surgeon is 100% in control of the robotic-assisted da Vinci System, which translates his/her hand movements into smaller, more precise movements of tiny instruments inside the patient’s body. The view of the surgical field is transmitted in 3D HD vision through a camera that is inserted into one of the tiny incisions. The 3D HD view can be magnified up to 10 times, giving surgeons a picture of the field that they otherwise would not have if they were performing traditional surgery. The robot also features instruments designed with seven degrees of motion – a range of motion greater than the human wrist. The enhanced view of the field coupled with the dexterous, delicate instruments allow for a shorter recovery time, less tissue damage, less post-operative pain and less risk of infection.
“The new da Vinci Xi is truly an amazing addition to the line-up,” says Dr. Maislos. “There are several improvements, but the most noticeable to me is the enhanced visualization. Da Vinci robots have always offered superior vision, but on the Xi, I am able to see anatomy and landmarks like I have never seen them before. I believe this lends to a safer procedure and a better outcome for my patients. I am really excited about the da Vinci Xi.”
